Max Corden has died, aged 96. A refugee from the Nazis in 1939, he helped drive Australia's 1973 tariff cuts. Max embodied how openness benefits Australia. Here's my 2018 speech launching Max's autobiography, Lucky Boy in the Lucky Country: andrewleigh.com/lucky_boy_in_t… #auspol

It was great for our @ANUCrawford @Devpolicy UPNG graduates to meet @VC_ANU, @HelenCSullivan and other ANU colleagues in POM on the eve of the 2023 PNG Update. These young lecturers are the future of UPNG economics.

What are you doing Wednesday evening next week? Come along to a very special event. I’ll be there. @ourANU is hosting a dialogue on the Voice. Bring your family, your friends, why not make a date night of it? (Maybe you need a night without the kids.) FREE eventbrite.com.au/e/the-aborigin…

Great to welcome the ANU Chancellor @HonJulieBishop at #UPNG. During her visit, the Chancellor highlighted the significance of the PNG and Australian partnership and the collaboration between #UPNG and ANU. Under her leadership as the Foreign Minister of Aus., the Aus. government funded the #SBPP building, and the ANU/UPNP partnership entered a new strategic phase. @devpolicy @ANUCrawford @ANUmedia

A message from Hugh’s family: We’re heartbroken to say that after months of illness Hugh died peacefully on the morning of the 29th of June. Widely admired by friends and colleagues, he was a beloved husband to Marilyn @lyrebird1 and adored father to Owen and Harry @MondayStory.

Every member of society should be able to access the best possible education society can afford. For Australia in 2023, that means the Federal government fully funding public schools by providing 100% of the Schooling Resourcing Standard. #ProudToBePublic

The Australian Institute of International Affairs is very sad to hear of the death of our immediate past president, Allan Gyngell AO FAIIA, this morning. Allan's contributions to the institute and to Australian foreign policy have been enormous. Our thoughts are with his family.

@andrewjnorton Being an engineer, makes a lot of sense if that's something that appeals to you. But it doesn't appeal to that many people unfortunately, and we need to find other avenues for people to spend the time and energy to learn to think and do.

Engineering is an interesting case study, with high rates of movement into non-engineering but highly paid professional and managerial jobs. The quantitative reasoning and methodical problem solving developed in engineering are valuable in other jobs.

I am not convinced that just because some degrees teach few skills highly specific to an occupation they necessarily teach more 'general' skills than a degree that also leads to an occupation. theconversation.com/why-arts-degre…

Australia’s higher education system needs a "nose to tail" overhaul, @VC_ANU Brian Schmidt tells @PatsKarvelas. If we don’t get it right, our nation won’t have the future workforce it needs or be ready for 21st century challenges like the rise of AI. abc.net.au/radionational/…?
