Every Game a Museum

In DEVOUR (Straight Back Games, 2021), the Asylum level houses many paintings by great artists, such as this mirrored version of Rembrandt's 𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘕𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘦𝘴 𝘙𝘶𝘵𝘴 (1631).

In Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (Troika Games, 2004), we come across this picture several times: it's a painting by Edvard Munch entitled 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘗𝘢𝘪𝘯 (1895), but also known as... 𝘝𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘦. How fitting.

In Resident Evil Zero (Capcom, 2002), the altarpiece of the Chapel is actually a real painting: it's Masaccio's 𝘚𝘢𝘯𝘵'𝘈𝘯𝘯𝘢 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘻𝘢 (c. 1425).

During your journey into the Void, in El Paso, Elsewhere (@StrangeScaffold, 2023), you'll see many, many paintings, all of them real. Here is Gustave Courbet's 𝘏𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘋𝘰𝘨𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘦 (1857).

In Zombie Army 4 (@Rebellion, 2020) you can see a few famous paintings, like David's 𝘕𝘢𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘰𝘯 𝘊𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘭𝘱𝘴 (1801)... but with a zombie twist, of course.

In System Shock 2 (Irrational Games, 1999), in several crew quarters on the Von Braun, the player can find digital displays containing classical pieces of art. Here is Gerard David's 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘌𝘨𝘺𝘱𝘵 (c. 1510).

In the last scene of Still Wakes the Deep (@ChineseRoom, 2024), in Caz and Suze's bedroom, you can see Charles Rennie Mackintosh's 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘔𝘰𝘰𝘯 (1892). As his name suggests, Mackintosh was Scottish, just like Caz and most of the other characters in the game.

In honor of the French people, who have been protesting against the far right these days, today's post is dedicated to Delacroix's "Liberty Leading the People" (1830). Here it is in Hitman (2016), Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020) and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003).

As a symbol of the fight for freedom and resistance to oppression, this painting has been the subject of numerous reinterpretations, like here on the Palestinian side of the West Bank Wall #freepalestine (if you're French, go and vote on the 30th of June and the 7 of July)
