🌍 Today, on International Day of Families, we celebrate unity across borders. 95% of deaf children born to hearing families don't have access to sign language. The WFD launches a policy paper advocating for sign language rights ➡️ wfdeaf.org/news/resources…

Deaf education and early intervention are the only fields of science that still view signed languages as “controversial” for healthy human development. Linguistics, brain imaging, psychology, and more eagerly research it to expand our understanding of what it means to be human.

Language deprivation is still not accepted by many/most practitioners in deaf education and teacher education. It was a key point of contention for the expert witness for the school district in the Carter Churchill case.

This is a huge deal for all disabled communities, but especially for our deaf signing communities that have had to contend with limiting frameworks in NIH to date. Our intersectionality of sociocultural linguistics and disability is a great fit for @NIMHD!

Day 3! We start off with @skbn_scientist talking about translational science and working in the lab. She does a great job of contextualizing how COVID19 accelerated translational science with societal investments and participation. @WilmotCancer @RSDeaf @UR_Med @URochester_SMD
