Congratulations to Sophie from George Washington Middle School for winning Virginia’s History Day competition. Her project is about the 1939 Alexandria Library Sit-In, led by Samuel Tucker, a civil rights activist who pushed Alexandria to address racial injustice.

Happy #Aquarius Season! In the 1860s, “The Aquarius” was used to clean buildings, extinguish fires, and tend gardens. It could “throw eight gallons of water per minute fifty feet high with power of only one hand.” That's pretty powerful! (1861.36) #virginiahistory
