This message became especially powerful after World War II, as the country expanded access to higher education and tied it to the idea of the American Dream. Not all of these programs were designed to lead to strong career outcomes. Many were created to meet enrollment targets and keep tuition revenue flowing. What was once primarily a system for training skilled professionals and innovators gradually shifted. Today, far too many students graduate with degrees that offer limited job prospects and little return on the significant investment of time and money.
