The Zcash devs have been grinding for years, some over a decade. They had options. Higher comp, sexier chains, better funded projects, less personal risk. Often underappreciated, underestimated, attacked, and ignored. But they didn't leave. Instead, they built, with an uncompromising belief that this project will change the world. Not a job. A mission. It's special. Unstoppable. Can't be replicated. And it will change the world.

Buying zcash:native on a CEX is actually not that dumb. If you are buying on a CEX I'm assuming it's "clean", properly taxed, money. Otherwise it would be dumb and not easy to get there. You buy your ZEC, withdraw it, and shield it. Now the link to your clean money is gone, nobody can trace the funds anymore. In the future you have two options: a) Keep the money "off grid". Nobody can prove you still have it. b) Reintroduce it into "the system". you have the necessary paper trail to show that you acquired the ZEC with clean money, so all your gains are clean now (and potentially taxable depending on tax residency) and you can buy your house (you are not going to be able do that with off grid money). If you are trying to obfuscate that you are buying ZEC in the first place (how would you actually do that?) you are basically taking option b) off the table. Practically you are taking clean money and turning it into black money. Of course, if you are starting with "black" money one possible option is to convert it into basically any crypto (again, how would you actually do that?) and then swap it on a DEX to ZEC. You can only get option a) anyway. It's usually fiat money going into the CEX. If you are already in crypto (incl. stables) you can also use a DEX, for course. It will also give you an on chain "paper trail".
