Describing the effect, Keith said those "with higher levels of chronic and cumulative stress prior to pregnancy may already be close to or at the limits of their cardiovascular and other systems," leading to higher-risk pregnancies.

Keith's quantitative analysis of 6501 pregnancy outcomes looked at alternate pathways for this association, and found that "embodied stress rooted in the social environment" drives health disparities.
