A first in the US, City of Fishers limited rental opportunities for ALL local property owners in ALL neighborhoods, even condos. Some residents asked “Can the city do that?” Statehouse said Nope. indystar.com/story/news/loc…

Great example of the anti-public-ed misinfo that gets put out either out of ignorance or intentionally. IPS is now giving ~1/3 of its budget to charters. Add in the enrollment from those schools and the totals go from 28,767 in 2017 to 30,567 today.
indy reporter@Indy_reporter_

ok. This is crazy and @IPSSchools REALLY needs to be investigated. Total Enrollment 2017-29,183 students 2026-19774 students This is where it gets REAL interesting and you can see the deportations are having a real time effect. 2024-6,461 ELL students 2025-6,546 ELL students 2026-6,198 ELL students Bottom line: Enrollment has been declining but the school budget has been going up. Where was the money going?

@jstewartIndy @Michelle_812_ @indystar I’m glad to hear you say so @jstewartIndy. Yet in your support for limiting rentals you chose to frame homeowners as better residents. This is not factual and it irresponsibly welcomes others to vilify renters. 😢

Indiana legislators want to make sure you’re NEVER able to OWN a home. They just banned Carmel & Fishers’ rental caps on single-family homes in a major giveaway to large, corporate landlords at YOUR expense Read my latest for @indystar in the comments. The cap only allowed 10% of those homes in a subdivision to be rented out. Now, the wealthy can compete with middle class families to buy as many as they want to rent for a premium.

@Michelle_812_ @jstewartIndy @indystar And there it is. The argument pivot from exterior maintenance concerns to just vilifying individuals who rent.😠 This is another reason why a city capping rentals and @jstewartIndy’s take on it are irresponsible and harmful.

When the maintenance is poor and the home is owner occupied it is pretty easy to make contact and pass out fines. But this isn’t true with Big Corp rentals or even small guys who own dilapidated properties. Indy has this registry, and so do other communities and there is still ZERO enforcement because no one answers the calls and they do not live at the property. None of this makes anything more affordable. It’s a fucking joke to act like this makes any place more affordable. Rent is never cheaper than owning, but renters are a great way to lower the property values of neighborhoods with great schools… and then the schools start getting worse because of the “new neighbors”, and it’s a death spiral from there.

@Michelle_812_ @jstewartIndy @indystar Exterior maintenance is a valid concern but it is not exclusive to rentals. Good news: City of Fishers now requires landlords to register their properties so that City code enforcement & HOAs can contact the responsible party.

My parents live in a big neighborhood in Fishers, and you can tell exactly which homes are rentals when you drive by. Yard looks like fucking trash. Tenants do not water the grass or keep the landscaping up. They give zero fucks about the HOA rules because the landlord is ultimately responsible, not the tenant. Try to contact Big Corp landlord about the grass not being cut and see how that goes. And this is why the city set the rental caps. Nothing becomes more affordable in Carmel or Fishers if more Big Corp rentals are allowed.

City of Fishers celebrates being named a Friendly Place To Live - at same time, residents are discussing why a Fishers City Councilor's pattern of verbal attacks are allowed to continue. ☹️facebook.com/FullhartforHSE…
FishersIN@FishersIN

@Nextdoor just ranked Fishers as the 20th friendliest place to live in Indiana, and we’re proud to be the only Hamilton County city to make the list. From helpful neighbors to strong community spirit, it’s the people here who make Fishers such a welcoming place to call home. 🏠 nextdoor.com/rankings/frien…

@aaron_renn Nope, the real story is the housing legislation that Speaker Huston (R) passed is extremely unpopular with Fishers Mayor Fadness (R).

@jstewartIndy @pjcombss @LibertarianJedi I am a renter and happy to be. I am not a 2nd class Fishers resident because I don’t own a home. It’s sad to see such contempt for people who choose to rent in our community.

@jstewartIndy @pjcombss Property ownership is not required for community engagement, full stop. And I am not convinced that ginning up home ownership is a priority of a municipality. But cultivating a variety of housing options for a sustainable community, yes.

@VareForFishers @pjcombss It’s one of a few tangible ownership stakes, which also might include business ownership. Barriers to such ownership stakes should be removed and taking such an ownership stake should be encouraged

@pjcombss A community has both a right and an obligation to ensure its residents have access to homeownership and a stake in the success of their community. A 10% cap is overly generous.

When leaders in Fishers try to silence & stonewall their colleagues on the dias, they disrespect the entire community. Transparency and open dialogue are not optional. That’s the job of an elected community leader.
Michelle Fullhart@MFullhart

I appreciate Latrica Schooley’s attempt to address this issue. Pascoe’s behavior as Prez shutting her down, was worrisome. At a time of deficit spending for our district, Pascoe & friends are protecting the Supt who seems to love spending on anything but teacher salaries.

For the life of me, I don’t see how Mayor Fadness’ depiction of Fishers here could be reality. You see, local folks own twice as many Fishers rental properties as the out-of-state investors. And if city ordinance enforcement is problem, well that’s the responsibility of Mayor.

A nearly 700-page bill, that impacts data centers and preempts local rental caps, was advanced by Indiana lawmakers on Feb. 24. indystar.com/story/news/loc…

@indystar This would make voting less convenient for everyone. For example, college students could no longer early vote while home for fall break.

The change would take effect upon the bill's passage, setting up voters for a shorter early voting window during the primary election season this May. indystar.com/story/news/pol…
