Got to know Emmett Ashford when he umpired in the summer collegiate league, when I played for the @RealGoldpanners @Goldpanners in the early 1970’s. I liked his strike zone when I was pitching 😁not as much when I was hitting 😒😠. I respected him a for being the first!!

Began the day with a visit to the cemetery where Emmett Ashford is interred. Baseball’s first black umpire, he was born on this day in 1914 in Los Angeles. When he passed in 1980, his ashes were buried in Cooperstown. baseballhall.org/discover/going…

Such profoundly sad news. Jean Ardell was a gifted writer and editor, an untiring advocate for women in baseball. She connected so many people and was always full of plans for future projects. We will honor her by carrying on, but it will never be the same. Thank you Jean.

The Baltimore Orioles just finished a four-game sweep of the Angels and have won eight straight. They are one game under .500. They are 2.5 games back of Toronto, 3.5 behind Tampa Bay and trail Boston by 4. And they are doing it with a payroll lower than Max Scherzer's salary.
