As always, Alyssa hits the nail right on the head. Just last week, an editor friend of mine reached out and we got to talking about this issue, and I said the following: In my opinion, while I definitely think the author is at fault for disingenuously releasing a book without disclosing the use of AI (which, by her own admission, she was privy to her editor having used apparently, though I suspect this finger-pointing is more just to cover her own ass), I think more of the blame lies with Hachette. Because one of four things happened here: 1. They acquired a self-published title after seeing its massive success, and did not do their due diligence prior to releasing it under their name; 2. They knew AI was used all along and thought the public would be too stupid to notice until the reviews came in and proved them wrong; 3. Their editors were incapable of recognizing possible AI usage; 4. AI wasn’t used at all, and they’ve now destroyed an author’s career based on hearsay. No matter how you cut it, that’s not a good look for one of the largest publishing houses in the world.
