Terence Tao on working hard: “Relying on intelligence alone to pull things off at the last minute may work for a while, but generally speaking at the graduate level or higher it doesn’t. One needs to do a serious amount of reading and writing, and not just thinking, in order to get anywhere serious in mathematics; contrary to public opinion, mathematical breakthroughs are not powered solely (or even primarily) by “Eureka” moments of genius, but are in fact largely a product of hard work, directed of course by experience and intuition. The devil is often in the details; if you think you understand a piece of mathematics, you should be able to back that up by having read all the relevant literature and having written down at least a sketch of how that piece of mathematics goes, and then ultimately writing up a complete and detailed treatment of the topic. It would be very pleasant if one could just dream up the grand ideas and let some "lesser mortals" fill in the details, but, trust me, it doesn't work like that at all in mathematics; past experience has shown that it is only worth paying one's time and attention to papers in which a substantial amount of detail and other supporting evidence (or at least a "proof-of-concept") has already been carefully gathered to support one's "grand idea". If the originator of the idea is unwilling to do this, chances are that no-one else will do so either.” Source: math.ucla.edu/~tao/advice.ht… Image: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Paul…

@heeney_luke I agree, only think I think is that even without one the systems can themselves possibly provide u a path to learn and get started in that section of problem space which might be more valuable relative to the pace of model improvement.

Perhaps the PhD is relevant to the extent that you have to understand the frontier to be able to properly select problems?

What worries me reading this advice is that, in the only 'case' that matters, its unclear (from the outside) if PhD programs are any good at improving these skills. PhD programs appear designed to make you good at the things Isaiah suggest may be obsolete.

You now have a guy in a bedroom who's able to make hit music being listened to by many But also a hoard of ppl who are delusional that they too can do it And a whole ecosystem built around selling these ppl the ability to larp Anyone can pretend to be a music producer by buying loops and presets There's more slop music than ever The quality of music doesn't really matter nearly as much as ppl think in being successful Tastemakers - DJs - being a pretty powerful force in the industry despite many of them never producing music Cost of production and distribution down to zero but yet there are lots of ways to make money in the industry Etc etc lots of parallels.

Electronic music production is a really good parallel to study if you want to understand consumption psychology of AI.

Met Fazio in Naples. He's actually incredibly smart and a genuinely nice person. Plus...The Vesuvio didn't erupt, I got rage-baited a few times, but at least now I know what 'vibe research' is.

@MegaBasedChad @Vedankt Zyns wrecked my gums and now I gotta to get the surgery. Effectiveness cant be overstated but costs are real. Took me about 6 months to be able to lock in, write, prove theorems, etc. but once I got through that I’m okay.
