Last week I spoke to Noland Arbaugh @ModdedQuad about his journey & his views on a BCI future. Then we drew some lines together on a shared canvas: him controlling the cursor using his thoughts (via @neuralink), and me - the old school way, using a computer trackpad.

Many of us now try to intentionally not sound like AI, even if it sometimes the perceived ‘AI style’ may be the correct way to express a thought. When the photographic camera was invented in the 19th century, traditional artists started finding new ways of expressing themselves - this is the very reason Impressionism was born. So what will become of human writing from here on? Are we about to see the emergence of entirely new ways of human expression via language? The post-LLM language expressionism

On February 26, FDA Commissioner Marty Makary @DrMakaryFDA and principal deputy Vinay Prasad @VPrasadMDMPH published a perspective in the New England Journal of Medicine that formally ended what they called the “two-trial dogma.” Going forward, the agency’s default position is that ONE adequate and well-controlled pivotal study, combined with confirmatory evidence, will be sufficient for marketing authorisation of novel drugs. The Makary-Prasad policy does not directly change anything for device approvals (like BCIs). But it reflects an institutional willingness to accept leaner evidentiary packages when the science supports it. For an industry where each pivotal trial represents years of work and tens of millions of dollars, even a modest easing of the FDA’s evidentiary expectations could meaningfully shorten the path from laboratory to patient.

I tried our own BMI + Mixed Reality robot control at Araya for the first time today. This system was built by @kaixhin , @RousslanDossa and the team. It was an amazing experience. I could intuitively pick up a mug just by imagining the action. Still some rough edges, but seeing EEG + gaze seamlessly drive a robot end-to-end was a powerful experience. Even with non-invasive EEG, it truly felt like experiencing a BMI.

The strategy is structured around seven mission areas, each targeting a distinct clinical or commercial application for BCI technology: 1. Machine control for patients with paralysis 2. Treatment for dementia and Parkinson’s disease 3. Restoration of sensory functions, including vision 4. Artificial limbs controlled by neural signals 5. Wearable robots driven by brain-computer interfaces 6. Ultra-immersive virtual reality and augmented reality 7. Defence applications Rather than concentrating on a single use case, South Korea is treating BCI as a platform technology with applications across healthcare, consumer electronics, and national security. For each mission, the government plans to assemble integrated teams spanning industry, academia, research institutes, and hospitals, mirroring the consortium approach that has driven Korea’s success in semiconductors and display technology. Full-scale mission-oriented project funding is scheduled to begin in 2027, building on what the ministry describes as over 30 years of accumulated brain research. The government has also signalled plans to form a national BCI alliance linking research institutes, startups, and established companies by sector.

One week after China’s regulators cleared the first implantable BCI for sale, South Korea has formally designated Brain-Computer Interfaces as a national future industry. The race to access the brain is intensifying. insidebci.com/policy/2026-03…
