The earliest memories I have of loving the game of football came as I swung from my uncle’s arm like a tree branch as his teammates sat around him in my grandmother’s living room. In the early 90s, the Lions took on the visiting Cardinals, but it was the away team that found a home for dinner off Wrexford Drive in Southfield. If my uncle was in town, it meant my cousins were also. We’d run around the Wrexford drive house playing tag and jumping on beds in oversize t-shirts with Memphis Showboats logos on them or caricatures of the Cardinals’ early 90s offensive line. If you knew me as a kid for more than 5 minutes, you knew that my uncle, my “Tío” in Spanish, was an NFLer for the Cardinals. To this day, my rocket football league commissioner presenting me with Tío’s No. 67 jersey is one of my fondest life memories. The Sharpes were proud of their Cuban son. So was Detroit. My grandfather once told me a story about running into Lawrence Taylor at the Pro Bowl in the late 80s. “Mr. Sharpe! Mr. Sharpe! What are you feedin’ that man!?”, my grandfather recounted in a heavy and laboured Cuban accent. Grandpa didn’t feed Tío anything. Anytime Tío would fly into Detroit from Arizona, my grandmother would prepare a feast. The table would look as though it was set for a family of four, but it was all for him. A family size bowl of congri, pork chops, and salad platter at minimum. I wondered how he could eat it all. I guess that is what it took to be one of 4 Cuban born players to ever play in the NFL, and to start every game over his 13 year career. The fact that my uncle struggled with his sobriety after his playing days has been well documented. Some may say that he leaves a complicated legacy. It is not complicated. He struggled, at least for a period of his life. Nothing could be more human. But he found God and rebuilt his life and his relationships with his family. Nothing could be more redemptive. We lay Tío to rest today. His story isn’t complicated, it’s complete. He was a son of Southwest Detroit who came from Cuba speaking very little English, while simultaneously attempting to translate for his parents. He’s the kid who turned those odds into a 13-year, 3 time pro bowl NFL career, and the player rep for his teammates for several seasons. He stumbled. But he stood back up. He returned to his faith, found peace, and offered love again. When I think of him now, I think of the tree branch arm I swung from as a kid and the sound of laughter in my grandmother’s house. Tío carried the weight of our pride, and we carried the warmth of his presence. That is the legacy he leaves behind.
