Maria Quitéria de Jesus (1792-1853) was a Brazilian woman who pretended to be a man to enlist in the army in 1822 under the alias of “Soldier Medeiros”. Her skillful handling of firearms led to her promotion to Lieutenant and her being called “Heroína do Batalhão dos Periquitos”.
