How they thought it was possible to use a navy to escort oil tankers on that strait boggles the mind. Both the escorting vessel and the oil tanker will be moving ducks for missiles. Hegseth and Trump’s logic that they can open the Strait of Hormuz is to completely miss the point. Why? Because apart from Iran announcing that the strait was now no longer passable, and a few strike on a handful of ships, Iran didn’t actually enforce a physical blockade. What effectively shut down the strait is actuarial science. The Strait isn’t shut down by a physical blockade, it’s shut down because the actuarial infrastructure has collapsed. Shell & Qatar have declared force majeure on a number of contracts. No insurer will want to insure vessels with a high potential of sinking to the bottom of the sea - the actuarial science won’t work. No shipping company will take the risk either. Iran knows this. Gulf countries know this. Just how Hegseth thinks his navy can solve this problem is mind-boggling.
