And perhaps the only barrier to more leakage is cost Yet although we can say this saves the State money; as a community are we really happy with having effectively such a large %in private education. Is it healthy for the community?
Guy Plummer@GuyPlummer34449

Since 2010 there has been an overall leakage from the state to private education from reception to Year 11 of 4% and more to Year 13 More parents have willing to use their declining real terms incomes for their children’s education.

@guernseyliz14 @advocategreen1 But what I’m saying is the community needs to coalesce around improving the State system And f necessary using funds allocated to other departments

@advocategreen1 @GuyPlummer34449 My reason for commenting is that there is a lot of scaremongering. The pressure that puts on parents to scrimp and save for a private education is inexcusable. As I say, it’s a personal and very individual choice, but all of our high schools have received positive inspections.

@ViaerFou @GuyPlummer34449 Owen did not just want educated workers. He wanted better-behaved, more compliant, more productive citizens. Education was a tool for improvement but also a tool for control and standardisation

@GuyPlummer34449 I don't think it is necessarily unhealthy. Parents are perhaps dealing with the system as it actually is; rather than how they want it to be. I believe in State education but it can and should be far better in this jurisdiction?

The big Victorian motivation was the worry that poor people were not good parents and brought up unruly hooligans. This worry continues to today when we think the same about children below school age and the need to replace the parents with proper support to make them good citizens who will do as they are told.

@GuyPlummer34449 To be fair, those figures aren't that extraordinary given what Guernsey is?

@ViaerFou @GuyPlummer34449 We could have fewer States schools. Wouldn’t that be a great saving? And remember States schooling was introduced to help parents who couldn’t or wouldn’t pay for their children to be educated.

@ViaerFou @GuyPlummer34449 Think if a larger grant was given making them more affordable and another 10% dropped out of the States system. The net saving would mean a lot more money for each States pupil.

#CHOG just wondering about our Helium supply and our MRI machine was that in on the risk register ? What are the cascading risks there of ? ( As far as I know our MRI is not a Helium free model stand to be corrected )

@ViaerFou Cheers! It’s been a problem that no one’s wanted to quantify for years If we don’t look at it, it’s not a problem But I saw it happening first hand

#CHOG excellent article by @RossLeBrun Think the legal loophole is they can come over for 10days/ per month. With the spectre of GST on the horizon this problem will probably get worse as people become more creative( cash in hand ) in ways to avoid paying GST.

@ViaerFou I think actually governance and a clear understanding of the committee system by members and officers should come first.

#CHOG there wouldn’t be any discontent, well much less if Deputies, CS, committee members had critical thinking tools that enable collegiate diversity of thinking & decision support, and greatly lessen the need for unnecessary consultants. Which Deputy will ask, what tools ?
