Ebola Non-Zaire species = Non-Existing drugs
Only Zaire ebolavirus has specific, approved drug treatments ready for deployment today.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) explicitly endorse two targeted monoclonal antibody therapies:
- Inmazeb (atoltivimab/maftivimab/odesivimab):
A combination cocktail of three monoclonal antibodies manufactured by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals.
- Ebanga (ansuvimab):
A single human monoclonal antibody developed from the memory B cells of an Ebola survivor.
The Clinical Status Today
- For Zaire Outbreaks:
Both drugs are commercially ready, stockpiled, and proven to drastically reduce mortality rates when administered early.
- For Non-Zaire Outbreaks:
There are zero approved therapeutics ready for commercial deployment. Because these monoclonal antibodies are engineered to bind exclusively to the Zaire glycoprotein, they do not work against Sudan or Bundibugyo species.
Emergency Protocol for Non-Zaire Strains
If the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is confirmed as a non-Zaire strain, medical teams cannot use Inmazeb or Ebanga.
Instead, treatment relies on:
- Optimized Supportive Care:
Aggressive intravenous fluid resuscitation, electrolyte stabilization, and symptom management.
- Compassionate Use Trials:
Fast-tracking experimental, unapproved antivirals or candidate products under the WHO's ethical trial frameworks.
