If you want to make $8,000 to $10,000 a month selling eBooks on Amazon, stop thinking about writing. The most profitable publishers I know spend almost zero time thinking about writing. Not because they're lazy. Because they figured out something 95% of beginners never do. Here's what most people picture when they think about starting a publishing business: • Come up with a book idea. • Write it, or pay someone to write it. • Put it on Amazon. • Hope people find it. That's how authors think. And self-published authors, on average, sell around 200 copies over the entire lifetime of a book. Publishers think completely differently. Before a single word gets written, before a ghostwriter gets hired, before anyone thinks about a cover... a publisher asks 3 questions. # Question one: is there proven demand for this topic right now? Not "is this an interesting idea." Not "am I passionate about this." Real demand. Measured in real Amazon data. BSR numbers under 100,000. Review velocity. Search volume on Google Trends that's been stable for 12 months. If the data says yes, you move forward. If it doesn't, you find a different topic. No exceptions. # Question two: who exactly is the reader, and what is their specific pain? Not "anyone interested in this topic." A real person with a real problem they need solved today. "A 45-year-old warehouse worker who wakes up at 3am with back pain and has tried two other books that gave him generic advice." That level of specificity. When you know exactly who you're writing for, every decision downstream gets easier. • The title. • The index. • The cover. • The first chapter. All of it sharpens automatically. # Question three: how does this book fit into a portfolio that compounds over time? Not "how do I sell this one book." A publisher thinks in assets, not products. Book 1 earns $600 a month. Book 2 earns $700 a month. But Book 2 also lifts Book 1... because Amazon's algorithm connects books in the same niche and cross-sells them automatically. "Customers who bought this also bought..." By Book 6, the portfolio is earning more than the sum of its parts. By Book 12, you're at $8,000 to $10,000 a month from books that each only needed to sell 3 to 5 copies per day across 4 markets. That's the portfolio effect. And it only works if you thought like a publisher before you published book one. So before you write anything, spend 80% of your energy on: 1. Validating demand with real Amazon search data. 2. Defining your reader so precisely that the book practically writes itself. 3. Choosing the keyword your book will rank for before you title it. 4. Designing a cover that matches the visual language of what's already converting in your category. 5. Mapping out the next 3 to 5 books in the same niche so the portfolio compounds from launch one. The writing is the smallest part of this. A brilliantly written book in the wrong niche, with a weak cover, targeting the wrong keyword will earn nothing. A well-positioned book with a clear reader, strong cover, and proven demand will outlast your expectations by years. The words matter. Quality always matters. But positioning is what makes the words findable. And findable is what makes the royalties real.
