Can we have an honest conversation about school health services?
Many schools with large student populations and high school fees still operate sick bays staffed by just one or a few certificate nurses. The issue isn’t about undermining certificate nurses🥹 they play an important role. The concern is whether the staffing, equipment, and systems are adequate for the number of learners they serve.
Which ministry is responsible for regulating school health services, staffing, and sick bay standards?
Shouldn’t there be clear guidelines on:
• Health worker-to-student ratios
• Shift coverage
• Minimum medical equipment
• Diagnostic protocols
• Referral and emergency response systems?
Some learners have developed life-threatening complications from illnesses that may have been manageable if identified, monitored, or referred early.
If schools can charge premium fees, shouldn’t they also invest in safer, stronger healthcare systems for the children entrusted to them?
Our children deserve better.
