This oil sketch by John William Waterhouse dates from the late 1890s and is most likely a study for Narcissus; 'Echo and Narcissus,' was Waterhouse's major work in the 1903 Royal Academy Exhibition.

@TaQuIn_MaUvE Raphael rendered immediacy by a utilization of optics blurring the hand and focusing in on the face. Whistler took notice. I write about this in my recently published book on Whistler’s famous Portrait of William Merritt Chase, 1885.

Ils sont nombreux à l’avoir interprétée, (Pavarotti, Lara Fabian, Bocelli, etc...) , nombreux aussi à l’avoir écoutée. Mais peu savent qu’elle a été composée en 1986 par Lucio Dalla, en hommage au grand ténor Enrico Caruso, qui passa ses derniers jours à Sorrente Bonne soirée 🫠

Researching my book on 20thC British art is introducing me to fringe figures I’d never come across before. One of them is Brian Hatton, a friend of John Singer Sargent, who was killed in WW1. This is his self-portrait from 1907.

A lovely #Roman glass bowl, in shades of green & yellow. It was made about 2000 years ago, probably in Italy, but ended up in a grave in the Rhineland; it is one of the largest glass bowls ever found north of the Alps (📷 Clemens Sels Museum Neuss)
