Camille Pissarro, a major figure in the development of Impressionism, provides a masterclass in depicting the myriad effects of light on dense foliage ~ and the winding path looks inviting too (Path Under the Trees, Summer, 1877)

@ahistoryinart Love how the expression of brushwork compliments the expression of the figure.

This oil sketch by John William Waterhouse dates from the late 1890s and is most likely a study for Narcissus; 'Echo and Narcissus,' was Waterhouse's major work in the 1903 Royal Academy Exhibition.

Described as 'almost frighteningly realistic,' and 'unfeminine,' by critics, this painting (1883) by Helene Schjerfbeck of her friend the artist Helena Westermarck depicts her absorbed in her work at the Academy of Fine Arts.

@TaQuIn_MaUvE Raphael rendered immediacy by a utilization of optics blurring the hand and focusing in on the face. Whistler took notice. I write about this in my recently published book on Whistler’s famous Portrait of William Merritt Chase, 1885.

Researching my book on 20thC British art is introducing me to fringe figures I’d never come across before. One of them is Brian Hatton, a friend of John Singer Sargent, who was killed in WW1. This is his self-portrait from 1907.

A lovely #Roman glass bowl, in shades of green & yellow. It was made about 2000 years ago, probably in Italy, but ended up in a grave in the Rhineland; it is one of the largest glass bowls ever found north of the Alps (📷 Clemens Sels Museum Neuss)

Édouard Vuillard painted a diverse range of subjects in the 1890s which drew inspiration from Gauguin and Japanese woodcuts as he focused on colour and symbolism rather than naturalism. 'Landscape of the Ile-de-France,' has an air of spontaneity, an impression of a stolen moment

As a Muslim, I learned that dogs are filthy and may not be kept as pets. Muhammad himself ordered the mass killing of dogs and then further demonized black dogs. Today, I know that dogs are better than anything Islam has to offer.
