If you have ever come across Miden, you probably know how accounts and notes play a key role in their architecture. If you haven't, you can check out the post below to get a basic idea of what it is. You might have as well heard about "nullifiers", if not well you'll be hearing it a lot in coming days but what does it mean in Miden's context? Let's understand it. On miden, for example when a transfer from one account to another happens, two transactions are needed to be executed. In that process, a note is created and a note is consumed. Now keep this in mind and let's imagine you have a gift coupon(This is your "note" in miden). It's a piece of paper that says "you can claim $10." When you use that coupon, the store where you got that coupon from stamps it: "USED". That stamp is the Nullifier. So, a nullifier provides info on whether a specific note has been consumed. The store(network/operator) keeps a giant list of all stamps ever made. If your coupon is already stamped, you can't spend it again. But here’s that important part, to know a note's nullifier you need to know all the details of the note. So if a note is private and the operator only stores the note's hash, only the person who holds the actual note details can compute or recognize its nullifier. So in above example, others will only see: Stamp #82460 was just used. But they have no idea which coupon it belongs to, who used it or how much it was for. The stamp reveals nothing. And Miden enables not just private transfers with this, but complete private logic for smart contracts. But wait, how is nullifiers in Miden different from nullifiers in Zcash who first introduced it? 》The state bloat problem - Every time someone spends a note, Miden records its nullifier (the "used" stamp) forever so nobody can spend it twice. - But imagine a busy network doing 1k transactions per second. At that rate, the nullifier database would grow at about 1TB per year. Operators would need to store all of it. - That's the state bloat problem, the database just keeps growing, forever, with no end. Zcash have this same nullifier idea and their list just grows forever with no cleanup mechanism. Miden's fix: Epochs - Think of it like a filing cabinet with yearly folders. Instead of one giant never-ending list of stamps, Miden splits time into epochs (chunks/periods). After every epoch, the current nullifier database is frozen and a brand new, empty one starts. - Operators only need to keep: The last 2 full epoch trees (recent stamps) and Just the root hashes of older epochs (a tiny summary, not the full data). - Also, you can still spend the older notes even after epochs end just with a lil more work as a user. You'd need to provide a proof that your note belongs to an older epoch. A little extra effort on your side, but the operator doesn't have to store all that old data. This essentially solves the state bloat problem for Miden unlike zcash where nullifier set grow forever. So like accounts and notes, nullifiers is also an important concept of Miden's design which lets Miden keep transactions fully private while still being trustless and secure.
