When I was with the Phillies throwing mid-90s, I thought I was using my back leg the right way. I dropped into it as deep as possible, then tried to power my way out-creating this L-shaped delivery. It felt explosive, but in reality, I was wasting energy. As I trained to throw 100 mph, I realized how big of a mistake that was. Picture this: you drop a ball down three ramps. One goes straight down and out like an L. One goes straight diagonal. And the third curves down and out smoothly. Which ball gets to the end faster? Science says the curve. The curve ramp wins because it builds speed quickly at the start, then carries that momentum all the way through. The back leg in pitching works the same way. Drop straight down first and you waste energy muscling out. Just fall down the mound and you can't load and use your back leg as well. When you ride the smooth curve that's where you get maximum momentum. I do this by setting myself up with a drift-when I get into my back leg, it's not just straight down, but down and out at the same rate. I put together a full guide on how I think about the back leg.
