We designed a hydrogel buffer layer to improve the CO2RR selectivity and maximize the CO2 regeneration from (bi)carbonate. Optimizing the hydrogel layer leads to an energy efficiency of 37 % and carbon utilization of 77 % at a total current density of 375 mA cm−2.
