Katia's legacy lives on and its a great privilege that the 'People on Volcanoes' mascot shares its name with her!

On the 3rd of June 1991 Katia, Maurice, and their fellow volcanologist Harry Glicken were visiting Mount Unzen in Japan to observe an eruption. At 4pm a pyroclastic flow rushed down its slopes and tragically killed 41 people including Katia and Maurice
