Oh how the tables have turned - Beijing must be fuming. A stronger Japan🇯🇵? Most of Asia is straight-up welcoming it with open arms now. China keeps weaponizing history screaming "Don't let Tokyo remilitarize!" like it's still 1945. But nobody's buying it because of Beijing's own aggressive tantrums: coercive trade bullying, ramming and harassing ships in the South China Sea, artificially militarizing reefs and islands that belong to other countries, destructive fishing practices (even poisoning the seas around the Philippines with cyanide), claiming territory that isn't theirs, and then weaponizing commerce - banning tourism, choking off critical minerals, whatever petty punishment fits the schizo meltdown that week. It's backfiring spectacularly. Countries aren't suddenly forgetting Japan's past; they're just doing basic survival math in the present. Unbeknownst to most because Japan doesn't boast about it: after World War II, Japan quietly rebuilt trust and ties with Southeast Asia through massive, low-key economic support that started as war reparations (paying out around $1 billion total to countries like Burma, the Philippines, Indonesia, and South Vietnam in the 1950s–1970s, often in goods, services, and infrastructure projects which evolved into one of the world's largest Official Development Assistance (ODA) programs. They did this without much publicity or fanfare or political strings attached, pouring trillions of yen into roads, ports, power plants, and other economic infrastructure across ASEAN nations, helping fuel their growth while conveniently opening doors for Japanese businesses. Compare and contrast with how China runs its Belt and Road Initiative - economic development with lots of strings attached, loans with interests that must be repaid lest having to cede to China a port or two. Beyond all of this, everybody just loves Japanese soft power, which makes the rest of Asia appreciate its reliable, non-aggressive presence even more.

Deputy Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy Guo Wei: Jay Tarriela, you are LYING again. First, you claimed that “Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessels never approach” any reefs administered by China. That’s not just inaccurate. It is brazenly detached from reality. In 2025 alone, PCG aircraft approached islands and reefs of Nansha Qundao roughly 250 times, including three overflights directly above Meiji Jiao and Nanxun Jiao. PCG vessels entered waters near Zhubi Jiao four 4 times, closing in to about 8 nautical miles. In the first 45 days of 2026, PCG aircraft have already staged 22 airspace intrusions near the relevant islands and reefs. 250 approaches. 22 intrusions in 45 days. And you say “never”? That is a deliberate distortion. If facts are inconvenient, erasing them doesn’t make them disappear. Second, you insist that “China is the only party to the South China Sea dispute not respecting the DOC and UNCLOS.” That accusation collapses under even casual scrutiny. Philippine personnel have repeatedly attempted to occupy uninhabited features such as Tiexian Jiao and Xianbin Jiao, violating Article 5 of the DOC. A Philippine vessel has been illegally grounded at Ren’ai Jiao for 26 years, a quarter of a century of fait accompli in direct contradiction of the DOC. Then there was the unilateral “arbitration,” launched in bad faith and weaponized politically. It is inconsistent with the DOC and the UNCLOS. You can’t even tell the difference between an EEZ and a territorial sea, and you want to talk about the DOC and the UNCLOS? Invoking the DOC and UNCLOS while ignoring their core obligations is not principle. It is opportunism. Third, you paint Philippine ships as perpetual victims of “bullying,” yet omit how frequently they sail provocatively close to China’s islands and reefs. Tensions do not rise out of thin air. They are manufactured by repeated provocation. If China were acting recklessly or indiscriminately, every claimant would be in constant crisis. But they are not. Why only the Philippines has a problem? Finally, some voices in the Philippines refuse to even acknowledge that a dispute exists, while simultaneously pushing unilateral claims. That is not diplomacy; it is denial wrapped in nationalism. Yet Jay Tarriela persists in this narrative, undermining diplomatic efforts for the sake of public theatrics. When posturing replaces problem-solving, it is difficult to interpret the motive as anything other than calculated provocation. If you want a serious conversation, start with serious facts. Otherwise, spare everyone the performance.

To inform the Filipino people—especially in light of Senator Cayetano’s concerns that we are not being fully truthful with our fellow citizens—let me clarify that Philippine Coast Guard vessels never approach any of China’s illegally reclaimed and occupied maritime features across the West Philippine Sea, unless the honorable senator believes that Bajo de Masinloc, Escoda Shoal, Ayungin Shoal, and Pag-asa Island are rightfully Chinese territory. On the contrary, it is the PRC that constantly engages in harassment and dangerous maneuvers CLOSE TO Philippine occupied features and waters. It is up to the honorable senator whether he chooses to believe PRC talking points filled with falsehoods or the Philippine Coast Guard personnel and independent journalists who present clear and incontrovertible evidence—photos, videos, and verifiable records. However, let me just note—we never venture closer to features occupied by Vietnam, Malaysia, and especially Panganiban Reef and Zamora Reef because such is irresponsible and neither grounded in the 2002 ASEAN-China DOC nor aligned with Philippine interests. Likewise, the Vietnamese and the Malaysians accord us the same treatment. The PRC is the only party to the South China Sea dispute not respecting the provisions of the DOC, and of the UNCLOS. The honorable senator’s statement simply muddles the issue, which whether intentional or not, makes China very happy as our political leaders doubt our own rights and actions. I cannot understand why it is so difficult for the senator to clearly and unambiguously call out PRC aggression. Mr. Senator, in case you missed last week’s developments—or your staff failed to brief you—the most recent MDA flight was challenged by a PLA Navy warship at a distance of 48 nautical miles off the coast of Agno, Pangasinan.
