Announced during COP30 in Brazil, the decision makes Colombia the first Amazonian country to protect its entire share of the rainforest from new extractive industrial activities. The policy halts dozens of pending concessions, including 43 oil blocks and hundreds of mining requests that had not yet begun operations. By prioritizing ecosystem preservation over fossil fuel and mineral extraction, the measure aims to reduce deforestation, protect biodiversity, and maintain the Amazon’s crucial role in global climate regulation through carbon storage and water cycle stability. The initiative, introduced under the Petro administration, reflects a shift toward sustainable development and could set a precedent for other Amazon nations facing similar pressures from resource extraction. 🗳️ With most of the results declared, 1,300+ of the ~5,000 seats up for election went to the Greens or Lib Dems, with the Greens taking control of councils in Norwich and London, and two mayoralties. It was a good night for the climate!

A small number of results declared so far as most places only began counting this morning - but GREENS have won 51 seats and LIB DEMS 241, both making gains while Labour are down. In fact, @LabourList saying results even worse than expected for Labour so far. Tories also tanking and Reform the big winners at this point in time.
