Does anyone else send emails from themselves to themselves with things to remember for Monday or is it just me? 🤪

Let’s stop using the word “homework” & “class work”, and instead call it “practice”. Stop categorizing learning activities by the location where it’s supposed to take place, & instead name it for its purpose.

Admin, don't let students be the only reason teachers stay. Make sure you are a reason they want to be at your school too. Leadership matters!

Kohn argued schools promote a kind of conditional acceptance when they elevate achievement and obedience rather than building community and relationships. Unconditional teachers accept students for who they are, not what they do. #relationalcapacity @AVIDOpenAccess @AVID4College

The message of unconditional positive regard is, "I care about you. You have value. You don’t have to do anything to prove it to me, and nothing’s going to change my mind." @AlexSVenet kqed.org/mindshift/5764…

Anyone who says children don’t need time for recess, play, and to socialize, doesn’t understand children or how they learn.

Remember that just because someone is in a leadership role, doesn't mean that they don't get stressed, burned out, or have self doubts at time. They are still part of the team and need encouragement and grace sometimes too!

Just a reminder that there is overwhelming research showing homework does little to improve achievement and can actually have negative effects. Recess however has many positive effects such as improved self regulation of emotions, improved interpersonal skills and focus!

It makes me sad when a teacher assistant says “I’m just a para” when they introduce themselves to me…we CANNOT do our jobs without support staff. They are the backbones of our schools. No one is “just” anything on your staff. Make sure your support staff feel encouraged & loved.

The first week of school should focus on building relationships. And part of that is establishing routines, procedures, and expectations. Consistency helps students feel more secure.

#DYK nearly 30% of WA students work while in high school? Under Supt. Reykdal’s plan—slated to go in effect in fall 2023—students ages 16+ can receive elective credits for paid employment, contributing toward their graduation requirements. More: ow.ly/jXhK50KbR4p #WAedu

Teacher effectiveness is not greatly improved by curriculum, new programs, or initiatives. But, when teachers are respected, valued, supported, & feel like their talents are utilized, then morale increases, job engagement soars, & students benefit too!
