Bee pollination is the ancestral state in Aquilegia, and nectar spur loss occured in the switch to flies. Spur length increased in the shift hummingbird, becoming even more exaggerated for moth pollinated species.

The composition itself uses a trailing stem throughout to play upon the "progressive" (or sometimes "re-gressive"!) evolutionary relationship often seen between species with different pollinator syndromes. (yes i know how evolution works, it is stylized! don't come at me 😅)
