The average minimum wage worker in the U.S. would need to work almost 97 hours per week to afford a fair market rate two-bedroom apartment and 79 hours per week to afford a one-bedroom apartment. That’s well over two full-time jobs just to be able to afford a two-bedroom rental.

The “housing wage” is the hourly wage a full-time worker must earn to afford a modest rental home while spending no more than 30% of his income on rent and utilities. In 2020, the housing wage was $23.96 per hour versus the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.
