NEW: Footage has been released showing a Chicago officer shooting his female police partner, reportedly after she ended their romantic relationship. Officers Carlos A. Baker and Krystal Rivera were pursuing a suspect believed to have a weapon under his jacket when they ran into a building. As Baker moved upstairs and fired a single shot, Rivera, who was following behind, was struck. Prosecutors say the gun accidentally discharged, while Rivera’s family disputes that account. Baker’s attorney says he immediately called for help and tried to assist her after the shooting. Rivera’s mother filed a wrongful death lawsuit last year alleging Baker was struggling to accept her daughter’s decision to end their romantic relationship when he fatally shot her during the foot chase.

The U.S. Navy Ship the U.S.S. Gregory was hit by Japanese naval fire in the South Pacific. Many were wounded and killed. French successfully brought these men to safety on the shores of The Solomon Islands. French was the first black swimmer to earn the Navy Medal for his heroism in 1943. We remember Charles Jackson French and commemorate his heroism and incredible swimming. Thank you for your service and your valor, Mr. French.
