The WIYN 3.5-meter 🔭 at NSF @KittPeakNatObs hosts NEID. It measures the "wobble" of nearby stars as unseen planets tug on the star they orbit, causing the Doppler effect. Astronomers use this to measure the mass of a 🪐relative to its🌟 📷KPNO/NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/T. Slovinský

November is here, temperatures are dipping, and WIYN-ter is coming… ❄️ ✨The WIYN 3.5-meter Telescope at NSF @KittPeakNatObs is photographed here under star trails, an effect of the Earth’s rotation seen in long-exposure photography. 📸: KPNO/NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/P. Marenfeld

The NEID spectrograph on the WIYN 3.5-meter Telescope at NSF @KittPeakNatObs is on the hunt for exoplanets. 🪐 It uses the radial velocity effect: measuring tiny wobbles of stars caused by the gravitational pull of planets orbiting them. 📷 KPNO/NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/P. Marenfeld

The blue glow above the WIYN 3.5-m Telescope at @KittPeakNatObs is M45, or the Pleiades: an open star cluster. The close-up was captured by the WIYN 0.9-m, but can also be seen with the naked eye around winter in the Northern Hemisphere! Book a tour! 🔗 kpno.noirlab.edu

⚠️New paper!⚠️ We have discovered a planet, Gaia-4b, and a brown dwarf, Gaia-5b, using the @ESAGaia spacecraft. Gaia-4b is Gaia's first planet detected with astrometry alone and represents the tip-of-the-iceberg of the 100s-1000s of planets that Gaia is expected to detect.
