@russ_hjelm @TimAAmor In fairness, we can’t really assume anyone’s motivation(s) for looking back—especially if the assumption is that doing so is akin to disobedience or sin. Healing is hardly linear, often takes steps in multiple directions, and can last a lifetime.

Following Jesus will mean walking away from the SBC & churches/denominations that are like the SBC. Jesus calls us to a better way—His loving, narrow way.

@natgrace79 Extremists on both sides *may* never engage in good faith, but we have to avoid painting with broad strokes. Algorithms only contribute to us thinking everyone who disagrees is an extremist with evil intentions. Nuance isn’t centrism. It’s an act of love and charity.

I cannot stress just how much I agree with this! If we can just come to the table with a healthy, good-faith framing of what those on the other side believe, then maybe...just maybe...we can make progress towards reconciliation.

Addendum: This applies beyond politics, which I didn’t have specifically in mind when writing this. Also, the “ThEy DoNt ReAd ThEiR BiBlE” take is simplistic. Lots of folks read their Bible with an interpretive lens that does violence to the text—and by extension, people.

@JoashPThomas I’m shocked at the number of Hispanic men that voted for him; at the same time, ingrained patriarchy (and by default, misogyny) runs deep. I don’t think they were going to vote for a woman—especially a woman with brown skin who resembled their mothers, wives, and daughters.

In 2016, I was disappointed by the Republican Party. In 2020, I was disappointed by white evangelicals. In 2024, I find myself disappointed by BIPOC / immigrant evangelicals (including members of my own family). This is why the work of decolonizing the evangelical mind is critical - both for the white evangelical as well as the Global South evangelical.
