Ravens circle over towns where Black communities once thrived. Appalachian coal towns once full of Black life now stand mostly silent. In “My Appalachia: Nevermore”, William H. Turner reflects on growing up in Lynch, Kentucky, remembering the churches, schools, music, and neighborhoods that once defined Black life in these towns. He writes about the loss of these communities and the cultural rhythms and spaces that vanished with the decline of coal. Turner bears witness to a Black Appalachian world that is largely gone but lives on in memory. Elizabeth Harden Gilmore didn’t wait for change—she initiated it. A trailblazer in business, civil rights, and public service, she became West Virginia’s first Black woman funeral director, organized boycotts that desegregated Charleston businesses, founded the state’s first CORE chapter, and expanded opportunities for youth. This Black History Month, we reflect on her lasting impact on WV and celebrate historian James D. Randall and his gift of 200 photos documenting Black life and history in the region to the Kanawha County Public Library.
