Fucheng, best-known #shorebird site in Zhanjiang Natl Nat Res, Guandong, is now rarely visited by birds. This has logic: we found little macrobenthos. With mudflats open to people fishing #shellfish & fish, it is depleted. Have wintering spoon-billed sandpipers found alternative?

Sanniang Bay Wetland in Qinzhou Bay in south China is clam aquaculture area. Separated from Xichangzhen by a river, habitat is sandy rather than muddy. After a strong decline in 2023, densities of clams are high again this year & local benthic fauna is quite abundant. #spoonbill

#4 The Common Yabby has some uncommon characteristics. Australia's most widespread #freshwater crayfish, it can range in color from blue to brown, black, yellow & red. And survive in temperatures from 1 to 35 C! It also has cannibalistic tendencies... wwf.panda.org/discover/our_f…

The upper tidal flats along #YellowSea are disproportionally important for shorebirds, including spoon-billed #sandpipers, but also the first to be lost to invasive cordgrass #Spartina. We tested effectiveness and side-effects of removal with a herbicide: frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…

📜A new paper by researcher Tong Mu from @Princeton shows that Upper tidal flats are disproportionately important, especially most valuable for foraging shorebirds, as some species are zone specialist. 🧐Read more👉ow.ly/HDx250A9MCi @GlobalFlyway @WaderStudy

Today @WWF celebrates it's 60th anniversary. We've achieved so much in partnership with communities, businesses, other NGOs & governments. But there is so much more to do - especially to reverse the loss of #freshwater biodiversity #ValuingRivers #TogetherPossible

Good news! After 30+ years, China finally takes action to update its protected animal list. Spoon-billed Sandpipers and Nordmann's Greenshanks have gone from 'nobody' to the strictest Class I protection. Asian Dowitchers have also been upgraded to Class II protection! ©Luke Tang
