4/4 In 1970 and as Bahrain was preparing for independence, Iranian claims were put to rest following a UN survey that once again confirmed that Bahrainis do not see themselves as part of Iran. So these statements are ploys by politicians benefiting from regional conflict.

1/4 It’s important not to give this statement unnecessary importance. Iranian parliamentarians have been doing this since the 1950s. Bahrainis across the board have always rejected these claims.

𝐖𝐚𝐟𝐚 𝐀𝐥𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐝 (@WafaAlsayed) She holds a PhD in international Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in 2020 and a bachelor’s and master’s from the Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS) at Georgetown University. Alsayed’s research focuses on the history of the Gulf’s popular and anti-imperialist movements, addressing themes that have often been ignored in recent scholarship by using local archives and sources. She previously worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) in Kuwait, a research analyst at the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) and as an investigative assistant for the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI).
