Hey #Web3! Wen mass adoption?
World Population: 8 Billion
51% Male, 49% Female.
For mass adoption, a significant # of females must be onboarded.
#RealTalk...That isn't happening anytime soon, & this community definitely isn't helping the cause either.
Is your wife/girlfriend/sister/mom/ daughter/female friend a member of this community? Would you want her to be?
Personally, I wouldn't try to onboard my worst female "frenemy" into this space.
Why?...Because it can be one of the most toxic environments to be in at times. Rugs, scams, wallet drainers...just being female. 👀
Being a female in #Web3 can be quite difficult, and I would hesitate to even suggest trying it out to most other females, tbh.
I have been in this space for almost 7 months, and there have been quite a few times that I have almost left & never looked back...
My Web3 Journey: I show up day in & day out to support others. I have NEVER tried to sell, shill, or scam anyone/anything. I don't promote or try to influence anyone.
What I have done is always try to be open, honest, and kind to everyone. Also, provide value when & where I can.
This includes spending a lot of time and energy researching a variety of hot topics that were of interest to this community. I, then, spent many hours in spaces sharing what I found/learned in hopes of helping others.
My dm's have always been open & I respond everyone. I am always willing to listen, answer questions, help out.
I believe in full transparency & having integrity. These are essential for building a strong & successful Web3 community. To this day, I haven't changed. I've remained true to myself & my beliefs.
Unfortunately, over the past 2 or so months, a few accounts (that I once considered friends/trustworthy) changed. Their actions went against everything I thought they stood for (against the beliefs we once shared).
These accts began to lie, deceive, mislead their followers. They started using questionable methods to grow their account. Personal gain became their #1 concern.
I questioned their actions. That went no where, so I cut ties. That's when I became a target for their attacks.
Did they attack me because...
I was wrong? No!
Out of Guilt? Maybe?
To try to keep me quiet? Probably!
The Attacks:
My account was attacked by bots.
The name calling-loser, drama queen, liar...and of course a list of much more explicit ones.
I was sent threatening dm's.
I was personally attacked in spaces... for joining the space that I was cohosting.
These attacks were mean spirited, hurtful, & costly. I've lost opportunities. I was kicked out of certain groups. I can no longer cohost spaces for fear of similar attacks. How is this fair? 😥
To make matters worse, a few in the community urged me to just keep quiet, play nice, keep the peace.
It was insinuated that me standing up for myself was wrong/causing drama, but me being attacked was somehow ok/not a problem? 😭
I still can't fully articulate just how demeaning & demoralizing all this has been.
For the 1st time in my life, I allowed myself to be treated as less than-because I am female.
To be fair, I suppose I had never been in such a male dominated environment on this large of a scale until now. I can usually hold my own, but not this time. I stayed quiet. I even began to question my place here.
These type of instances keep females away & hinder mass adoption!
What happened to me is just my story, 1 bad experience.
Is it an isolated occurrence? NO!
I hope others will share their stories. Things need to change.
Web3 is still new. We can build something better than anything we've seen in Web2 or prior for everyone.
With that said, I'll end with a more universal message:
Stop cultivating Web3 into yet another toxic environment.
Avoid complacency. Unchecked bad actors will only grow more destructive over time. Never turn a blind 👁!
Finally, always speak up. Defend yourself, the truth, & what's right! 💛
