Are girl children no longer safe in Cameroon? When they get missing, people claim they are with boys. But now evidence is showing that a lot of children are being assaulted every day by people known to them. The latest incident, reported in Yaoundé’s Mendong neighbourhood, involves the alleged assault of an 11-year-old girl by a man known to her family. The suspect has been taken into custody following the intervention of local authorities, after residents threatened mob justice. The child, who was rushed to a health facility, is said to have suffered repeated abuse over time, according to initial accounts. This case comes shortly after another reported incident in which an 11-year-old girl was raped and killed, further intensifying fears about the safety of children—even within trusted environments. The question we should be asking ourselves is how many more cases remain unreported, and what will it take to stop the cycle? #MMINews
