World Mental Health Day 2025 Theme: Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies Globally, mental health and psychosocial support are recognized as essential, especially during humanitarian emergencies and catastrophes like conflict, displacement, epidemics and natural disasters. These crises often cause psychological distress and contribute to long-term mental health issues. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one in five people in conflict-affected areas will face a mental health condition. However, access to mental health services remains limited in many low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria. In Nigeria, the scale of the challenge is stark. An estimated 20 million Nigerians live with mental health conditions, yet fewer than 10 percent of those who need care can access support. The number of psychiatrists and mental health practitioners is very low for a population of more than 200 million. Services are especially scarce in emergency and catastrophe circumstances, whether in conflict-affected communities, internally displaced person camps or natural disasters. Access to mental health services remains limited in many areas, and compounded by stigma and traditional beliefs which impedes on seeking help in times of crisis. The National Association of Seadogs (NAS) joins the comity of nations and organisation on the occasion of 2025 World Mental Health Day to respond directly to these gaps, and advocate for access to mental health services in Nigeria. NAS-PC aligns with WHO goals and national mental health policy in pushing for accessible, affordable, and equitable mental health care and in supporting the protection and well-being of citizens. The overall objective is to use today’s World Mental Health Day as a platform to raise awareness, engage communities and policymakers, and advance access to mental health services in Nigeria, especially in catastrophe and emergency contexts.

NATIONAL CAMPAIGN AGAINST DRUG ABUSE & HOMELESSNESS Nigeria faces a dual and escalating crisis of widespread drug abuse and growing homelessness, particularly among young people and vulnerable populations. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reports that 14.4% of Nigerians (14.3 million people) aged 15–64 have used psychoactive substances, well above the global average of 5.6%. Meanwhile, urban centres like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano have seen a sharp rise in street-dwelling youths, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and the urban homeless, with limited access to shelter, rehabilitation, or mental health services. Homelessness, driven by rapid urbanization, economic hardship, and insurgency, affects millions and exposes individuals to further abuse, hardship and stress-induced mental health conditions. This campaign, themed “Pathways to Dignity”, will go beyond statistics to confront the human realities behind these crises, shifting public perception from stigma to support. By fostering empathy and understanding, we aim to build a more supportive environment for rehabilitation, recovery, and reintegration. Combating drug abuse and homelessness also requires a national dialogue on socio- political accountability and citizens' welfare. The campaign seeks to catalyse that dialogue, demanding action from government and urging private organizations to fulfil their corporate social responsibility (CSR) in addressing these pressing issues. The campaign aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including: · SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being · SDG 1 – No Poverty · SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities · SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities · SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions Join us on Saturday, October 4th, 2025 to address this escalating crisis in Nigeria.

National Back-to-School Project The NAS Street Child Project is an initiative of the National Association of Seadogs (NAS) instituted in 2013 to address the significantly high rate of out-of-school children in Nigeria with UNESCO and UNICEF statistics indicating that Nigeria accounts for 10.5 million of the 61 million “out of school children” worldwide as at 2013. Determined to contribute its quota to humanity and makes a difference in the lives of these vulnerable children, NAS maintained that education was the key enabling factor that makes a great difference in children early life if they are exposed to education that help to energize their imagination. Join our awareness campaign on Saturday, 4th October 2025

Address by the National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) on the occasion of the #internationalliteracyday 2025 The cost of inaction is dire. Every child left uneducated today becomes a burden on society tomorrow. Literacy is more than the ability to read and write; it is the passport to economic participation, resilience against crime, and empowerment for citizenship. nas-int.org/address-by-the…
