What the US is doing to Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores is absolutely crazy and outrageous.
They are being subjected to a ludicrous show trial, in which they cannot fairly defend themselves.
They can't pay their lawyers, because unilateral US sanctions block them from using Venezuelan government funds. So they are going to lose competent legal representation, and instead get a court-appointed nobody attorney who knows nothing about the case and can't adequately defend them.
Moreover, CNN quotes a legal expert who admits that the US regime's kidnapping of President Maduro was a clear violation of international law, but the US judicial system doesn't care.
This is a Kafkaesque imperial travesty of justice.

I lived in Miami from 2008-2010.
I’ve lived in several American cities but there is something inherently fake in the social fabric of Miami.
Although it has better state governance & tax policy than most other states, the social culture likely won’t change.
The institutions & economy are built around a weird hedonic value system that is unlikely to consistently produce real thought leaders and winners like other parts of the country.

Very top heavy - mostly successful founders and VCs who go to live in their nice houses and aren’t out there being part of the community Tons of larping founders - I got invited to some “female founder dinners” and every single woman showed up dressed for a kardashian wedding and had obviously spent all their time in the salon, not building a startup The grifting is real - we won Miami Hack Week in 2023. The $10k prize money did not exist and it took 6 months to even get a hold of the organizer. He never paid. When the next Miami hack week came around, I tried telling 3 people in the community. Organizer told them I was a liar and that I had been paid. This bullshit would never happen in SF or NYC. Miami hack week seems to have a new organizer now so I’m hopeful it’s being better managed.
