I’m sorry but I hate this narrative acting like he was topping out at 90 at NU. Before my time but by all accounts he was very capable of throwing mid 90’s. Yes his average was a touch lower but he was a flame thrower at NU. Those who were around correct me if I’m wrong

Winners win and that is what UC LHP Luke Joyce does. Throw away the radar gun and use your eyes this guy just gets out ona routine basis. Comes in bases loaded 1 out and indices inning ending double play and continues to cruise the rest of the game. He is 1 of 1, an anomaly

I couldn’t care less about being the smartest coach on the field. I just want to be the coach my players know genuinely cares about them.

One of the biggest mistakes I made as a hitter... I thought hitting was all about my swing. - If I struggled, I'd fix my swing. - If I hit a ground ball, I'd fix my swing. - If I popped the ball up, I'd fix my swing. Then I got to professional baseball. After being around Major League hitters, I realized something. The best hitters weren't obsessed with their swing. They were obsessed with their operating system. - They knew what pitch they were hunting. - They knew what pitches they could drive. - They knew what type of contact they wanted. - They had a plan before they ever stepped into the box. That completely changed how I practiced. I stopped studying my swing. I started studying myself as a hitter. I did this by... Going to Walmart, bought a notebook, and started tracking everything. - Every pitch I saw. - Every swing I took. - Every ball I hit. - What I was thinking. - What I was feeling. At the end of each week, I'd go back through my notes and look for patterns. Then I'd build a plan to improve my operating system. I wasn't trying to build a better swing anymore. I was trying to build a better hitter. Because here's one thing I learned from being around Major League hitters: The swing wasn't the starting point. I watch a lot of HS and Travel Baseball and here’s what gets evaluated that most players/coaches/understand: 1. Catch Play - how do you treat “getting loose” before a game? Is there meaning to it or are you just throwing to throw…. 2. Ground Balls between innings - 7-3-21 7 inn, 3 GBs/inn, 21 reps/game. How do you treat those? How are your throws? 3. On Deck Reps - What are you doing to prepare for your AB? You have three responsibilities. 1. Time the Pitcher, 2. Communicate w/base runners 3. Relay location to hitter. You’re not there to “get loose” 4. Response to Failure - how do you respond to a Strikeout, an error, a bad call, giving up a bomb? 5. Communication - Are you talking between pitches, directing cutoffs, helping teammates w/ pitcher tendencies, etc. 6. Competitiveness In Non Game Situations sprinting on and off the field, backing up bases, prep steps, moving with hitters tendencies, does every pitch matter? These are the aspects of the game that are often taken for granted but make a huge difference for your evaluation.

The GPA that decides college eligibility is not the one on the report card. The NCAA throws out electives and recalculates a separate core GPA from sixteen approved academic courses, on a straight four-point scale, no plus or minus. A student carrying a 3.2 at school can land at a 2.5 in the NCAA's eyes. Division I requires a 2.3 core GPA to compete as a freshman. The number that matters is the one most families never check until it is too late to change it. Pull your athlete's core course list this summer. Do the real math.
