Franz Ferdinand had plans to dismiss the bellicose Chief of the General Staff Conrad von Hötzendorf (pictured). The latter has suggested war against Serbia at least 25 times in the past year. Unlikely to be sacked now, he is likely to do so again.

San Giuliano, Foreign Minister of Italy, confidently remarks to a diplomatic acquaintance: “The crime is horrific, but world peace will be no worse off.” Internationally, Franz Ferdinand was perceived (inaccurately) as a war hawk within the Austrian regime.

German Kaiser Wilhelm II is enjoying a summer of yachting in the Norwegian fjords when the news from Sarajevo reaches him. A personal friend of Franz Ferdinand, he is deeply distraught. He decides to head back to Berlin "to take things in hand and preserve the peace of Europe."

The anti-Serb riots continue throughout Sarajevo, with the police unable or unwilling to rein in the violence: Hotel Evropa is thoroughly trashed by rioters, who pick through the smashed furniture and horse carriages for valuables.

Throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire, shocked citizens are quick to assume Serbian involvement in the assassinations. Serb homes and businesses have come under attack by furious crowds in Sarajevo and Zagreb. At least two Serbs have been killed.

Austrian police are immediately on the lookout for accomplices to the two assassins already caught: Ferdinand Behr, friend of Gavrilo Princip (but uninvolved in the murders), is being taken into custody, hounded by outraged locals.

The news is spread across the world: Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria-Hungary, has been murdered in Sarajevo, together with his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg. The couple leaves behind three children and an empire in shock.

The archduke and his wife are rushed to the Town Hall, both grievously wounded. Franz Ferdinand, barely conscious, pleads with his dying wife: "Sophie, don't die, stay alive for our children!" She dies before they reach the Town Hall; Franz Ferdinand dies moments later.

As the car comes to a halt on Franz Joseph Street, 19-year-old Gavrilo Princip (pictured) steps up from the sidewalk, draws a pistol and fires two shots, hitting both members of the royal couple. He is seized by onlookers, who nearly beat him to death before police intervene.

The motorcade takes off again, but in the stressful aftermath of the bombing, no one instructed the drivers of the new itinerary. At the Latin Bridge, they take the right onto Franz Joseph Street, away from the hospital. Governor Potiorek furiously orders the car to a halt.

Eventually, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife decide to visit the wounded from the bombing, who have been taken to the local hospital. Governor Potiorek, while unable to guarantee further attacks won't happen, doesn't think Serb fanatics are wily enough to try again today.

As Mayor Čurčić begins his speech with assurances that everyone in Sarajevo "enthusiastically greet Your Highness's most illustrious visit with the most cordial of welcomes", the archduke angrily interrupts: "I come here as your guest and you people greet me with bombs!"

The archduke and his wife, shaken but otherwise unharmed, are quickly taken to the town hall, where Mayor Fehim Čurčić (pictured) anxiously awaits them. Despite knowing of the attempted murder of his guests, Čurčić is too frazzled to change his prepared remarks in response.

The bomb detonates under the following car, injuring several people on board; the would-be assassin swallows a cyanide pill and throws himself into the Miljacka river, but his suicide is foiled: the cyanide is of poor quality, and he is quickly dragged out of the water.

The six-car motorcade makes its way through the town, the locals cheering them on from the pavements, when suddenly a small round object bounces off the folded-down roof of the archduke's car: a bomb, hurled by a Serb assassin!

The visit to Sarajevo is taking place on Saint Vitus Day, a feast day of particular importance to Serbs, and there has been some concern that local agitators might cause unrest. Even so, the suggestion to have the parade route lined with soldiers has been rejected.
