The killing of children in Gaza is a tragedy, and Israel will bear a moral burden even if it isn't at fault for the war But *many* Palestinians just aren't upset about it like us. Many believe child martyrs sanctify the cause. They've made children wear suicide vests; that's well documented by Amnesty. And it's not just Hamas. The ruling Fatah party has an armed wing that also forced children to wear suicide vests, in order to kill Israeli civilians in the Second Intifada. The photo below is of Hussar Abdo, who was stopped by the IDF at a checkpoint outside Nablus, in the West Bank, in 2004. He was 16 and had 20 pounds of explosives under his coat - sent on a suicide mission by Palestinian leaders - not from Hamas, but from Fatah. The Israelis rescued Hussam, sending a bomb squad to disable the vest and take it off him. He didn't want to die, but there was nobody in his society - the Arab Palestinian society - to value his life. So Israeli soldiers had to value his life when others didn't. And I'm so glad they did. Instead of being helped by his society, he was told the story of paradise and martyrdom - of sex with 72 virgins in the afterlife. Westerners simply cannot get their heads heads around this. But it's critical. If you want to know why Hamas intentionally baits retaliatory violence and then maximizes child casualties, it's because they think it's holy and righteous. Palestinian terrorism, with the exception of the far-left PLFP, is all Islamist in character. The intentional killing of non-combatants on both sides is *not* an issue for them. It's at the heart of what they do. And unless you are willing to confront that, you will be unable to formulate sound moral thoughts.
