All this and zero human rights too!

Chinamaxxing started as a cultural phenomenon. But there's a strong material case for Chinamaxxing too — simply put, a tribute to the pace and scale of poverty reduction and economic development China has achieved, unprecedented in human history. I've been sharing data on China's economic achievements for some time now. Alongside genuine positive engagement, I've been receiving a recurring type of comment, especially from people based in North America and Europe: “yeah, that’s super impressive, and we have to stop them.” Challenging this Western hegemonic anxiety — the idea that development is only legitimate when it doesn't disturb the existing hierarchy — is one of the most important intellectual tasks of this moment. I recently spent some time travelling in China. The high-speed rail network, the urban infrastructure, and the sheer scale of what's been built actually exceeded expectations. But the most impressive part isn't that China is good at building things. It's that it builds things that deliver tangible material outcomes for hundreds of millions of people. None of this means China is without real problems. Air pollution, labour precarity, and a thin welfare state are all genuine structural economic and social issues worth scrutinising. But my core position is simple, and it follows more from a basic moral commitment than any particular affection for China: when a poor country becomes less poor, when hundreds of millions of people escape material deprivation and lead longer, healthier, more dignified lives — this is worth celebrating. And not only when it happens in ways convenient for those countries already wealthy and powerful.

How do they know it’s a Chinese underwater surveillance system? Was it personally signed by Xi Jinping?

@LH_86_ You forgot to add that the last fatal incident was that she refused to drink hot water that the restaurant Ah Yee handed her and ordered an ice cold Coca Cola instead! The Ah Yee used her spy camera to take a photo of her and reported her to the Communist police.

The truth of the matter is that the journalist had a dangerously low "Chinese-style social credit score" due to her repeated jay-walking from her office to the Starbucks across the street. After the 外办 had harassed her several times by sending a local SWAT team to her apartment in the early morning hours, to warn her to mend her ways, she crossed the line one last fatal time and her social credit score went in the negative. After weeks of tricky lawfare tactics with the US embassy, Chinese authorities de-escalated the situation by demanding that she completes a mere 1,888 hours of community service to get back to a positive credit score. Her courageous refusal to bend the knee in the face of authoritarian brutality led to her visa not being renewed. She is now stateside, out of harms way.

@periodistan_ Two years ago, I went to Beijing in May and noticed a lot of roses along the highway and I thought they were tacky fake flowers. Then I got out of the car and went to inspect some at the roadside and was really surprised that they are all real lol!

"The West has movie stars and pop singers the world loves. China doesn't produce these." Don't be ignorant...you are wrong, China does produce movie stars and pop singers. Be sides Jackie Chan, Dylan Wang is a popular Chinese actor/singer, this year he was in the NBA Celebrity Game in LA California USA. Also Ren Jialun ( Allen Ren) is a popular Chinese pop singer/actor. He even performed in Texas, USA this year. And not just these two Chinese celebrities but many more Chinese celebrities like Dilraba Dilmurat are popular and have fans all over the world.

Not being able to name "three living Chinese people" isn't a failure of the West. It's a failure of Chinese civilization. It lacks the appeal the West has. The West has movie stars and pop singers the world loves. China doesn't produce these. By the way, I *was* able to name 3 Chinese people: Xi Jinping, Ai Weiwei (dissident artist) and Jack Ma (Ali Baba). Does Jackie Chan count? I could name a few more. But the point is, everyone in the world wants to have sex with White people. What about Chinese? Do they have this sex appeal? No, they don't. Should anyone care about their society then? Nope!
Arnaud Bertrand@RnaudBertrand

This is genuinely incredible and says SO SO MUCH about the perception of China in the West. This is the #1 news show in France, and the host - David Pujadas - asks the pundits around the table (a sample of the top media figures in France) if they can name 3 living Chinese people. That's it: they just need to say the names of 3 living Chinese people, anyone. This should be extremely easy. Yet not of a single one of them can name a single Chinese beyond Xi Jinping. They do not know a single living Chinese person beyond the president. That's the level of ignorance of China we're dealing with in the West today, in 2026. This is the source for the video: tf1info.fr/replay-lci/vid… Aired live yesterday 28th of May 2026.

That Beijing disagrees with this journalist’s work is one thing. Expelling her from China is another. How many U.S. media correspondents are currently reporting from 🇨🇳, compared with the number of Chinese state media journalists operating in the 🇺🇸? Calls for “mutual understanding” ring hollow when access and reporting are increasingly restricted.

RSF joins the New York Times in calling for the reinstatement of China correspondent Vivian Wang. Her expulsion in February is another example of Beijing's use of visa weaponization against journalists, particularly those working for U.S. media. Wang has been a New York Times correspondent since 2020. She is one of dozens of journalists who have been barred from working in the country since 2020.

@yyyole I was in Chengdu with two Russian friends in Jan 2026. The weather was lovely lol. We had tea at People’s Park on a bright sunny day. Then I went back to Chengdu on March 2026. Going again in June 2026. I love Chengdu the most of all Chinese cities I visited so far.

If you feel an urge or a need to say something negative every time you see someone post something positive regarding China, and you are not getting paid for it, then you need to re-examine your life priorities and/or get your head checked. Or take a trip to go see China.
