#Somalia’s Defence Minister Wades Into U.S. Politics by Defending @IlhanMN Somalia’s involvement in American politics took a new turn today after the country’s Minister of Defence, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, publicly declared his support for U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar in a Facebook post. In his statement, Fiqi wrote: “If our daughter is being targeted because of her identity, we will firmly stand by her… As Minister of Defence of Somalia, I say clearly: I stand with Ilhan.” The Defence Minister went on to describe Omar as a role model who “succeeded through her own abilities” and whose critics “cannot blame Somalia nor condemn her for her birthplace.” The remarks are raising eyebrows because they cross into U.S. domestic political debates. Critics argue that such public endorsements by a foreign government official amount to interference in American politics and risk undermining diplomatic norms.

Sen. Ted Cruz has joined voices calling for U.S. recognition of Somaliland as an independent nation. In a letter to the White House, the Texas Republican calls Somaliland "a critical security and diplomatic partner for the United States, helping America advance our national security interests in the Horn of Africa and beyond." Recognition would support U.S. national interests in Africa and counter growing Chinese influence in the region. I recommend the State Department proceed with its policy review and formally accept the Republic of Somaliland as a nation.
