@Wastertorp @SPIRITCORES @armoredrob @oubagaku i said that people learning english are the ones outside of an english-speaking society, and you said that all first-world countries have some kind of english levels, ignoring the existence of other countries

if you know 2 languages, your native language and English, you didn't really learn another language. given how prominent it is, it's more like learning 0.5 languages. on the other hand, a English native speaker learning another language is like learning 1.5 languages

@ilovecheetos3 @armoredrob @oubagaku Did you grow up in an environment where english was not more commonplace than a third language, say Russian or Mandarin? I would assume you had access to the internet and a TV, but maybe you're an anomaly.

@ilovecheetos3 @SPIRITCORES @armoredrob @oubagaku You are reading a lot into my comment that I never wrote, and simultaneously ignoring literally everything I did write. I never said anything remotely close to "only people from the first world learn english". Please quote which comment you are referring to.

@JPHilllllll Alternatively: why would you want the working class to work long, gruelling hours at a medial job when you could have a non sentient being do it? Slave owner mentality.

Read Raising Expectations (and Raising Hell)
It’s just a weird sickness at some point, this level of greed. You have $200 billion dollars. You could wipe your ass with $100 bills and keep getting richer every day. Why kill thousands and thousands of jobs at this point?

Jeff Bezos has begun the process of raising $100 billion for a new fund that would buy up manufacturing companies and then use AI to automate production.

@Wastertorp @armoredrob @oubagaku you replied to someone saying that many people struggle with english with the argument that people in some specific countries dont. yeah thats not the point, it's about the majority

@ilovecheetos3 @armoredrob @oubagaku You seem to think ouba is making an english-specific claim. The essence of her statement lies not with the language in itself but with the ease of picking up a language you're naturally surrounded with. You might as well exchange english for, say, french in Quebec.

@ilovecheetos3 @SPIRITCORES @armoredrob @oubagaku "Portuguese is easy because it's similar to my language" is a true statement, because it's implied that you're referring to native speakers of the romantic languages. The implication is not that Portuguese is universally easy.

@Wastertorp @SPIRITCORES @armoredrob @oubagaku the problem is your generalization of the world as english speaking countries + central europe. it would be like if i said portuguese is easy because its similar to my language, completely ignoring the billions of people that dont talk spanish. its anglocentrist

@63norrussell @armoredrob @oubagaku Quite frankly if you grow up in a place with English speaking tourists, English TV, internet access, and public advertisement in English, and you still don’t speak the language, you have an intellectual disability. Though I should rescind the “severe” part.

@Wastertorp @armoredrob @oubagaku your point was "no one struggles with english in a place where it's commonplace (Netherlands) unless you're severely intellectually disabled" which I refuted as many here do struggle a lot with English. we also have french class during school so many of us know the basics

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in new interview on orbital datacenters: "The challenge of course is that cooling, you can't take advantage of conduction and convection, so you can only use radiation, and radiation requires very large surfaces, but that's not an impossible things to solve. There's a lot of space in space. We're going to go explore it. We're already radiation hardened. We have Cuda in satellites around the world. In the meantime, we're going to explore what is the architecture of datacenters look like in space. It'll take years, but that's ok. I got time." via @theallinpod

@SawyerMerritt Cooling isn't an issue via radiation. You use Stirling engines to power a heat pump loop to boost the hot side to 200-300C and suddenly you can radiate tons of heat and keep the chips cool. People act like this is physically impossible.

@rantar8_ @snxwbxby @armoredrob @oubagaku It's as if someone said reading isn't impressive since reading is integrated into every part of society, and then you come in saying "well ackshually the indigenous Pintubi tribes do not have the written language" -- obviously those are not who we're referring to.

@rantar8_ @snxwbxby @armoredrob @oubagaku The implication, which you autists apparently didn't pick up on, is that English doesn't count as a full language because it is so widespread. Obviously that implication does not apply in places where it is not widespread. That should not need to be spelled out, it's implied.

@63norrussell @armoredrob @oubagaku I still agree with the premise that a Dutchman outside of the big cities learning English is far less impressive than a Dutchman learning French. Even in the countryside it is difficult not picking up some English, near impossible if you've got internet access.

@Wastertorp @armoredrob @oubagaku this is just not true outside of the bigger cities. I (dutch) had MANY classmates whose English was subpar. I regularly get asked by my coworkers to explain simple concepts to the english speaking customers because they don't know enough english.
