My favorite part of this scene in Tombstone is the double meaning of Doc’s cup spinning at the end. On the surface level, it just appears to be a clever defusing of temperaments by appealing to humor, deescalating the tension without the expense of Doc’s dignity. However… Ringo had drawn his weapon and thus revealed his drawspeed to Doc, who did not return the gesture and therefore kept Ringo in a state of uncertainty. Furthermore, unnoticed by everyone else in the room besides the two, Doc’s cup spinning actually matched every single spinning trick Ringo made in exact order. The fact that Doc Holliday could remember this and mimic it while in a state of intense intoxication was deeply unnerving. It’s an implicit threat: “I exceed your capabilities. I at my drunkest am still faster, smarter, and deadlier than you at your best.” Ringo knows this, you can see the slight dread creeping into his face as Doc progressively mirrors his routine. Their entire interaction is a deeply serious exchange of threats masked by a learned barrier and a sheen of drunken jocularity, with the last word being an unspoken death sentence that only Ringo could understand. Doc Holliday pulls him into his private murder dimension and keeps him there for the rest of the movie, marinading him in fear and haunting him from corners and shadows until his time comes.

I love everything about this scene in Tombstone. But the exchange in Latin is wonderful: Doc: “In vino veritas” (In wine there is truth) Ringo: “Age quod agis" (Do what you do, or, Keep your mind on the job) Doc: “Credat Judaeus Apella, non ego" (Apella the Jew may believe it, not I - an allusion from Horace meaning "tell it to someone else") Ringo: “Iuventus stultorum magister" (Youth is the teacher of fools) Doc: “In pace requiescat" (May he rest in peace)

Part 1 of my WhatNot app addiction. I have so many more movies on the way, but my bank account is screaming bloody murder at me. The app will go unused henceforth.

I got diagnosed with Bells Palsy two weeks ago and I’m doing totally fine. But it’s wild things you never even think you won’t be able to do for a period of time like smile or close an eye. Definitely gives you perspective.

My Favorite Horror of 2025 - The Top 2: 2. Weapons-Anything so refreshingly original and well-executed is going to place high on my list. 1. Bring Her Back-The best compliment I can pay it is that I haven’t felt that icky when the credits rolled since I saw Hereditary.
