Next season for Liverpool WON'T be a transition season, despite the fact we're probably changing as much of the squad as this summer, in terms of numbers.
1) The spine is now settled. Last summer we got rid of Trent, phased out Robbo, sold Díaz, Núñez and lost Jota.
Including Alisson's chronic incapability to stay fit for a whole season, it was obvious that we would have a starting XI with 5/6 new players.
Going into this next season, we will only really change at RW in the starting XI. Isak, Wirtz, Kerkez, Frimpong will all have settled (in varying degrees). Losing Ekitike for so long is a blow, sure. But Isak will have had a whole World Cup to regain his groove and then he'll have his first full pre-season. I fully expect he will be properly settled before the season starts and we'll start seeing the world class striker we signed.
2) All of last season's signings will take positive steps forward as they settle and we'll start finding consistency from them. We've already seen really positive signs from Wirtz, Kerkez, Frimpong, Ekitike but consistency has been the issue.
The patterns will solidify, the understanding between players will increase and quickly find ourselves in a good position with lots of weapons throughout the side.
3) The new players we sign this summer will enjoy the increasing stability and consistency of the rest of the squad and find themselves in a position to add their extra qualities, while any of their deficiencies and inconsistencies will be protected by the form and consistency of the now settled squad from last season.
Overall, despite the fact we could see a similar amount of movement in the squad as we saw last summer, the context is different and we'll benefit from doing the most important work last summer.
