That was until we received the news today. The remains of another HERO has been found. U.S. Navy Aviation Radioman 2nd Class Robert L. Cyr Jr., a teen sailor who helped rescue downed WWII airmen, have been identified 80 years after his death. He enlisted at the tender age of 17, and flew patrols in the Pacific including the Southern Pacific combat areas and the Battle of the Solomon Islands. He was also part of the Patrol who also rescued other fliers who had been forced down. Cyr was assigned to Navy Patrol Squadron. On January 22, the 19-year-old and eight other crew members were aboard a PBY-5 Catalina seaplane that crashed during takeoff near the present-day Republic of Vanuatu, in the South Pacific Ocean. He served with honor in EOD Mobile Units 6 and 2, deploying again and again into the fire of Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2009, the very best called his name — he was hand-selected for the elite Naval Special Warfare Development Group. On August 6, 2011, Chief Null was killed in action when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter Extortion 17 was shot down in Wardak Province, Afghanistan. It became the single deadliest day in U.S. special operations history. Chief Null didn’t just serve. He ran straight into danger so others could live.
