The number of US-listed companies is in a sharp decline: The number of US-listed domestic companies has fallen below 4,000 this year, the lowest since 2020. Since 2022, this count has dropped by -1,800, or -31%. At this pace, the number of publicly listed companies could decline to the lowest on record as early as next year. By comparison, about 6,500 firms were trading at the beginning of the century. Meanwhile, cumulative corporate buybacks have reached a massive $12.7 trillion since 1998. Big stocks will keep getting bigger.
