It also includes measures to protect convoys, including anti-drone defence and civilian support. 👉German officials, including Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, have warned that Russia could be ready to attack NATO by 2029. The head of Germany's BND intelligence service, Martin Jäger, added that Vladimir Putin is ready to test Europe's borders and provoke an armed confrontation "at any time". Problems revealed by the exercise? Recent NATO exercises, such as Steadfast Defender in 2024, have revealed significant weaknesses in the infrastructure: Aging infrastructure: Many bridges and tunnels along the route are too narrow or unstable for heavy equipment; for example, some bridges in Germany and Poland cannot support the weight of tanks without reinforcement. 👉Congested roads: Highways are not capable of handling massive convoys, leading to delays and the risk of sabotage. 👉Modern threats: Drones are causing chaos in coordination, while local police are not prepared to ensure security during movements. These findings have led to the need for investment in modernization - Germany plans to spend billions of euros on this, including expanding railways and strengthening bridges. OPLAN DEU is part of NATO's broader preparations for potential Russian aggression, which the alliance considers a real threat within 2-4 years. The Russian Foreign Ministry called the report "provocative" and warned of escalation. Experts such as Yuri Baranchik (analyst) warn that such plans can actually increase tensions, while German politicians emphasize the defensive nature of the document. The plan underscores Europe's growing concerns about Russian expansionism following the war in Ukraine and signals a shift from a defensive to a more offensive NATO strategy.
